The mild climate and beautiful scenery in the Kerrville area have drawn outdoor enthusiasts since the Comanches roamed these hills.
Below are just some of the outdoor pursuits available to area visitors:
- Swimming, Tubing, Canoeing and Kayaking—in the Guadalupe, Medina, Sabinal, and Llano Rivers, and don’t forget Singing Wind City Park with its Olympic-size swimming pool
- Hiking—at Kerrville Schreiner Park, Lost Maples, Hill Country State Natural Area or the Kerr Wildlife Management Area
- Bicycling—both road and off-road biking on the highways and back roads of Kerr, Bandera, and Gillespie Counties
- Skateboarding—that’s right, a great skate park in the city of Kerrville’s Singing Wind Park. It’s “half-pipe heaven”.
- Walking—in town and in the local parks. Kerrville has frequent Volksmarch events, also.
- Birding—the Hill Country is habitat for a number of species not found anywhere else in Texas
- Golfing—there are private courses at Comanche Trace and Riverhill Country Clubs, and public links at Scott Schreiner Municipal Golf Course. The Scott Schreiner course hosts the annual James Avery Hill Country Golf Classic, a three-day golf tournament where golfers play each course on different days!
- Shooting Sports—Kerrville is home of the 2008 World Cup Shotgun Championships. The Olympic Shooting Trials were held right here in Kerrville, and the Hill Country Shooting Sports Center is the place to see for anyone interested in skeet and trap shooting. Several of the 2008 Olympic medal winners trained at the Shooting Sports Center.
- Hunting—White tail deer are in abundant supply and exotics from black buck antelope to trophy elk are plentiful as well; just one of the reasons why Kerrville and Kerr County are famous for hunting.
- Fishing—area lakes and rivers offer anglers the opportunity to catch native and stocked species of Guadalupe Bass, as well as perch and catfish, both with bait and with a fly rod.
