Life in Kerrville
The Kerr Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) was created in 2010 to provide a comprehensive economic development strategy that generates significant and sustainable value for residents of Kerr County. Our mission is to promote the retention and creation of job opportunities in Kerrville and Kerr County. KEDC is managed by a nine member Board that represent the Kerrville Chamber of Commerce, Kerrville Economic Improvement Corporation, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Kerrville ISD, City of Kerrville, Kerr County and two local businesses. By coordinating the efforts of all of our stakeholders, the regional economy can grow by retaining and expanding existing employers, supporting new & small business development and attracting new employers to relocate to Kerrville / Kerr County, creating “A Natural Environment for Business.”
A successful economic development strategy spurs economic growth and broadens the tax burden more evenly throughout the community. Costs for public services will inevitably rise, economic development is a means to mitigate those costs for the residents of Kerr County by creating commerce and commercial enterprises that help share the costs of our public goods and services.
KEDC works predominately with primary businesses. We define primary businesses as any entity that sells the majority of their products and services outside our local area. This brings new money into our economy. This creates new and real wealth in Kerrville. Successful companies and business enterprises help share the tax burden with our residents. This helps support public safety, road maintenance, EMS, and schools without raising taxes or decreasing the quality of the services that we all enjoy.
Kerrville is Booming! Our economy is absolutely booming. Unemployment is down, spending is up, home sales are up, companies are hiring, and companies are announcing multi-million dollar expansions in Kerrville and Kerr County. It’s a great time to live and work in the Hill Country!
Just this past year alone, KEDC, and our community partners, have been proud to announce that we have worked with three companies that will create 649 new primary jobs in Kerrville and Kerr County.
Mooney International resumed operations this year. They are creating 285 new jobs and are investing $20 million in current product lines. Bending Branch Winery is investing over $3.5 million to create a new production / distribution facility and tasting room to support their expansive growth. Most recently, James Avery Craftsman, Inc. has announced plans to create 360 new primary jobs in a $15 million manufacturing facility across from the airport. These great companies are creating quality job opportunities for the residents of Kerrville and Kerr County. That is 649 new job opportunities and approximately $40 million in direct investment in our economy!
KEDC has worked with an independent economic impact service to analyze how this will benefit all of us. These three projects will create $22.6 million in new payroll and an additional 796 indirect jobs. These additional indirect jobs will have an annual payroll of almost $16 million. That amounts to $40 million in new wages to be paid to working residents of Kerrville and Kerr County a year!
The positive economic benefits are already being seen by helping support the attraction of new retail & service providers and more home sales & residential construction. Unemployment locally is down to 4%, home sales were up over 20% last year and local retail sales collections increase by 11% last month and 17% this month. The increases in retail sales collections show that more people are buying more things this year than last. That means they are in a better economic position and have a greater confidence in the future.
The Kerr Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) goal for every year is to continue to stimulate a diversified and strong economic climate, through new business recruitment / development and the retention and expansion of existing businesses. We recruit new businesses, help established businesses with relocation and/or expansion efforts and work with local companies. We do all of this to help create jobs for the residents of Kerrville and Kerr County, thereby making Kerrville a Natural Environment for Business!
